Farm animal names

Working animals need calling names: short, carrying, and different enough from each other to survive a field at feeding time.

Updated 27 July 2026

Goats, pigs, horses and cattle all learn names, and several of them learn them fast — pigs especially. The constraint here is the same one dog owners face, only more so: you're calling across a yard or a field, often with several animals responding to the same tone of voice, and the name has to survive that.

The other constraint is scale. When you're naming a dozen at once, a system helps: one theme per group, or per year, or per colour. The theme browser is built for exactly that kind of batching.

What makes a good farm animal name

  • Short and carrying. One or two syllables, opening on a consonant that survives distance.
  • Within a herd or flock, vary the vowel sounds — that's what tells two names apart at range.
  • If you're naming several at once, pick a theme and work through it. Future you will be grateful.

There's a longer version of this in the guide to Naming two at once, including the tests worth running before you commit to anything.
