Bird names

The only pet that may end up saying its own name back to you, at six in the morning, indefinitely.

Updated 27 July 2026

Naming a bird has a wrinkle no other pet has: the talking species may learn the name and repeat it, so you're not only choosing something you'll say, but something you may hear said back at you several hundred times. Names that are fun to hear at high pitch tend to survive that better than dignified ones.

Parrots, budgies and cockatiels respond well to bright, rhythmic, repeatable sounds — the same qualities that make a name whistleable. Finches and canaries won't learn a name at all, which frees you up entirely. Everything below is tagged for birds; the name quiz has the rest.

What makes a good bird name

  • Two syllables with a strong rhythm — the ones parrots pick up fastest are the ones with a bounce.
  • High, bright vowels carry over the noise a bird makes; low, soft names disappear under it.
  • Avoid names close to words you say constantly, or a talking bird will blur the two forever.

There's a longer version of this in the guide to What the origins mean, including the tests worth running before you commit to anything.
